El Camino Del Diablo (The Devils Highway)

February 23, 2024 @ 7:45 am - February 24, 2024 @ 3:00 pm MST

Come join us for an Epic Overlanding Adventure on a journey along the Mexico/AZ border to explore nature and submerse in the outdoors while challenging yourself and your Jeep to a long extended journey conquering a remote trail that is on a bucket list for many.

This trail has a lot of history behind it. The original Camino was an important trail between Yuma and Sonoyta, Mexico, and for centuries has been notorious as a route along which people die. Conquistadors, missionaries, prospectors, traders and others traversed it, beginning in 1540, usually heading to or from California. So many perished along the way that it became known as the Devil’s Highway. Time permitting, we will also stop by some of the the old military equipment along the route, see pic.

This Adventure will be led by Alan M. who has extensive Overlanding experience and has done this trail numerous times in the past. We will be driving both days and camping one night, far away from modern amenities. If you haven’t done Overlanding before, please make sure you’re prepared for the challenges of off grid exploration. You will need to bring enough food and drinks to sustain yourself, your passengers, and the means to cook it. The desert can get pretty cold at night in the winter, make sure you have warm sleeping bags or the means to heat your tents! This is a long journey, and you will end up with ¼ tank or less of gas by the time you complete the trail. If you have gas cans to store the extra fuel OUTSIDE the Jeep, please make sure to bring them. Lastly, please bring a bundle of firewood for the group campfire at night!

We will travel through a corner of the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, the Barry Goldwater Air Force Range, and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge (Trail 3 in Arizona Trails South Region). Along the way we will cross over O’Neil Pass, the Pinacate Lava Field, and easy sand dunes. Before heading north to Wellington, we will pass through the Tinajas Atlas Mountains (Trail 1) and then head back northeast along the Cipriano Pass Trail (Trail 4). If you want to visit Organ Pipe, I suggest you arrive the day before to enjoy everything there is to see there. Numerous camping and lodging facilities are in the area exist to accommodate your stay.

El Camino Del Diablo East/West Side that will be traversing is an easy trail rated 2 to 3 that is suitable for any Jeep with offroad tires. This will be predominantly a dirt road that’s rocky and rutted in a few places. The road is EXTREMELY dusty, going topless or without doors is highly NOT recommended! Make sure all your bolts and nuts on the Jeep are properly tightened and torqued as the road can get pretty bumpy in places.

!!!IMPORTANT!!! Each participant over 18 (not vehicle) must obtain a free permit at https://bmgr.recaccess.com and believe me, you DO NOT want to go through military land without one! The permit limits the group to a max of 9 vehicles which we will strictly enforce on this trip.
