Anyone can become a trail leader. In fact, we highly encourage it! Our ultimate goal is to have multiple trail runs every weekend of various difficulty levels consisting of rock crawling, scenic drivers, camping, over-landing, and everything in between.
Our main concern though is to ensure the safety and comfort of our members while they entrust themselves to your care. As such, we have developed the following simple rules that all trail leaders must abide by:
- You must extensively research each trail to ensure it’s passable. Yes, that means even trails that you have done a dozen times or more! We live in Arizona and the monsoon season changes trails considerably from increased difficulty levels to making them outright impossible to cross. Various websites such as AllTrails, TrailsOffroad, FunTreks can be great resources to read comments from people that recently ran them. In addition, you may also want to check USDA Forest Service for any fires in the area. It may also be a good idea to contact the rangers and verify trails are indeed open as well.
- Please have at least 2 GPS devices with the maps of the trails you will be running. You can use your phone, your tablet, or even purpose-built GPS devices such as Garmin. I personally prefer Gaia phone app in combination with Garmin/FunTreks. You may also want to try out OnXmaps which is much easier to use/learn than Gaia.
- NO ONE IS LEFT BEHIND! You are the first one on the trail and the last one off the trail. Be prepared to assist with any mechanical issues encountered and find the means to get people off the trail when necessary. You may want to purchase a satellite-based communication device in the unlikely event calling for an off-road rescue becomes necessary.
- Three Strikes Rule! If 3+ trail participants make a “reasonable” complaint about your individual event, your leader privileges will be suspended for a month. A second three strikes rules violation will result in permanent removal of your leadership ability!
